The TÜBİTAK 1005 project titled “Developing Circular Economy and Industrial Symbiosis for Transforming Adana Hacı Sabancı Organized Industrial Zone into an Eco-Industrial Park to Comply with the European Green Deal.”, in which our Faculty Member Dr.-Ing. Mehmet Ali Küçüker was among the researchers and Research Assistant Berat Batuhan Kaplangı took on significant responsibilities as a graduate scholar, has been successfully completed. The project, led by Prof. Dr. Volkan Şevket Ediger from Kadir Has University, and supported by stakeholders including Dokuz Eylül University, İzmir University of Economics, Adana Alparslan Türkeş Science and Technology University, the Ministry of Industry and Technology, the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, and the Turkish Standards Institution, concluded with a final meeting held on Friday, September 27th, in Adana.

This interdisciplinary project, carried out in collaboration between universities, industry, and the public sector, aimed to identify the necessary steps for transforming Organized Industrial Zones (OIZs) in Türkiye into eco-industrial parks under the framework of the European Green Deal (EGD). The Adana Hacı Sabancı Organized Industrial Zone (AOSB) was selected as the pilot region, and the project was carried out with the participation of 22 volunteer firms. Each firm was visited individually, their production processes were examined on-site, and environmental value stream maps were created for each process, identifying symbiosis alternatives. Life cycle analyses were conducted to examine the environmental impacts of products and production processes, and the benefits of symbiosis were evaluated. The innovative methods developed during this process have been designed to be applicable to other OIZs across Türkiye in the future.
